The focus of SB20 sailing in Belgium is at the royal coastal town of Ostend on the North sea where the Royal North Sea Yacht Club takes the lead in organising SB20 class events. Wide sandy beaches, choppy waves and tricky changing current are the specialities of the area. In addition to their own boats the Belgian fleet often welcomes their  neighbours from the Netherlands, which is within a 3-hour drive from the Hague.

What is it like to sail in Belgium?

The highlight of the event calendar for SB20 Belgium is the Open Belgian National Championship, that makes part of Ostendcup in the middle of the summer. It is jointly organised by three yacht clubs: the Royal North Sea Yacht Club, the TWINSCLUB and Ostend Sailing vzw. The racing area is shared with catamaran dinghies (among them – the Patins, wooden single-handed boat with no rudder and centerboard), Dragons and IRCs. It takes place in the turbulent waters of the North sea in front of the beach, so spectators are welcome to bring binoculars. Three days of racing may be followed by delicious lobster barbecue on the beach with spectacular sunset or a Clubhouse reception with a tasty portion of “Moules frites”, the local gastronomic speciality.
